The Native Prairies Association of Texas (NPAT) became the owners of the 51 acres Lawther – Deer Park Prairie Preserve on January 27, 2014 and signed the conservation easement agreement with the Bayou Land Conservancy (BLC) on February 14, protecting this rare prairie for eternity. The preservation of this phenomenal prairie was achieved when BLC raised the purchase price of $4 million dollars within a few months!
The Deer Park Prairie is an example of one of the most endangered ecosystems, the tallgrass prairie. This prairie is home to over 300 native species of plants and animals such as pocket gophers, three-toed box turtles, Eastern meadowlarks, black bellied tree ducks, red-winged blackbirds, black-shouldered kite and many others.
Located in the heart of industrial oil centered Houston metroplex within the city of Deer Park the prairie is surrounded on three sides by housing subdivisions and on one side by a cemetery. The Deer Park Prairie would now be another housing development if not for the efforts of many prairie groups in the Houston area and around the state, led by the Bayou Land Conservancy.
The Houston Chapter of NPAT is involved in all aspects of the Deer Park Prairie from conservation and maintenance to providing docents for visitors to educating children. Everyone, please join us in this endeavor!
